Advance-Fee Job Scams: How Fake Employers Steal From Applicants
An 'employer' offers you a job, then asks for upfront payment for equipment, training, or background checks.
The advance-fee job scam is the most common monetary fraud targeting applicants in 2026. The pattern is consistent: a recruiter reaches out (often unsolicited) with a remote role that pays well above market. After a perfunctory 'interview' on Telegram, Signal, or Microsoft Teams chat, you're 'hired' within hours. Then comes the ask — wire $400 for a work-from-home equipment kit, pay $250 for a 'compliance training', or send a refundable deposit for a company laptop. Every dollar disappears.
Red flags
- 01Any request for payment before your first day of work
- 02Payment requested via Zelle, Cash App, Venmo, gift cards, or cryptocurrency
- 03'Fully reimbursed on your first paycheck' framing
- 04Hiring decision made within 24 hours with no real interview
- 05Communication moved off the original job platform to personal messaging apps
- 06Equipment shipped by a 'partner vendor' the company refuses to name
Real-world example
"Congratulations! To finalize your Data Entry Specialist position with Pfizer Remote Services, please send $499 via Zelle to our procurement department to cover your work-from-home equipment kit (Dell laptop, monitor, headset). This amount will be fully reimbursed in your first payroll deposit. Please complete payment within 24 hours to secure your role."
Why this scam works
Applicants invest emotionally after an offer is extended. The 'reimbursement' framing reframes the payment as a temporary inconvenience rather than a fee. Scammers target candidates who recently posted about looking for remote work on LinkedIn or Indeed, then use urgency to bypass the candidate's pattern-matching.
What to do
- 01Stop all communication and do not send payment
- 02Search the recruiter's name + 'scam' to find prior victim reports
- 03Report to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov and to the platform where you first encountered the role
- 04If you already paid, contact your bank within 24 hours — Zelle/Cash App/Venmo recoveries are extremely difficult after that window
- 05Run the original job posting through Sentari to flag it for other applicants
